As far as I remember the UDS translates the serial signal to TCP/IP so the machine is networked via 'ethernet'.
It also does modem emulation, so software like the ASH e-mailer (which only works with dial-up) can connect via what it thinks is a modem connection to the net.
For more specific details it might be helpful to ask Ronald himself as he knows what he talks about while I might have mistaken something, or to drop a line to the manufacturer or the reseller of the hardware.
