I've worked with this stuff. I've written technical documents about it as part of my job. I won't claim to be an expert, but I have worked with serial servers and I'm familiar with how they operate. Looking at the technical specifications, this looks like a serial server.
Please listen (read?). If the guy wants to network-enable his Atari to allow him to browse the web and use FTP or whatever, this might not be the right thing to buy, since it doesn't allow him to do any of that. If the guy wants to get his BBS on the net, it may work perfectly however.
You get the difference now? You might actually be persuading the guy to buy something which will be marginally more useful than a serial cable, but costs 20 times as much. That wouldn't exactly be a favour. In such case it would be better for him to buy something else.
