I doubt you will find "Atari clone" in an Encylopedia so the
term is not too well defined i'm afraid.
From my experience, computers having been designed
in a way that the Atari TOS runs natively, meaning without
emulation of the 68k, graphics, sound or other peripheral
hardware is called an Atari clone.
The "Medusa" and "Hades" computers, both of which
Fredi Aschwanden was involved in who is now obviously
planning this Coldfire clone, were of this kind and even
featured "legacy" Atari TT hardware such as ACSI port,
VME-Bus, TT resolutions and so on.
The "Milan" was not that strict and required to emulate
some parts of the missing hardware to be compatible.
TOS and MiNT got patched, but i don't remember the
exact details.
A stock PC running Aranym is usually not considered an
Atari clone, even though it might be supporting legacy
hardware way better than a clone does ...
