Actually there is a very elegant solution to your software problem: SIO2PC. This is a cable which connects the Atari directly to a PC. On the PC you can have all your Atari Diskimages as files. A small server software on the PC provides the disk image data trhough the cable to the Atari... as a little bonus at three times the original speed (57600kbits instead of 19200).
