Erm, Does the ST know if a monitor is connected?

Well actually yes it does, but ONLY for Mono monitors.

It does not know if a Colour screen is connected though.

So, yes, the STs monitor port sends out standard RGB signals so almost any compatible screen will work with it. VGA Screens are NOT compatible.
