Hi
Yep it's quite possible to use an STE on the internet. There are a couple ISP's that you can choose. I use Demon, but there is also Zetnet, or is it zednet.
There are other IP's but I don't know the ones off hand.
You will need the following software:
HSmodem - to fix the buggy serial port.
STik or STinG - which is the TCP/IP stack.
and then it's the client software:
Newsie is a good alround program whihc caters for email, newsgroups, FTP, and text web browsing.
CAB - for you web browser.
AtarIRC - for Internet Relay Chat. There's also MIRC (Ithink).
As you have an STE, then you should get it upgraded to 4 meg a.s.a.p. You can then use a RAM disk, if you don't have a hard drive.
Newsie, IIRC needs a 1 meg min. machine. and CAB may also need more memory. You will certainly find a performance inprovement with more memory and I don't think it's really practical on a floppy only system without a large ram disk (1 or 2 meg).
There is another internet package called NOS. This is the very early program, and I presumet his could be run on a floppy based system! I've never tried it as it looks quite a nightmare to set up!
