Hi, Adrian.
You should be able to find a 2:nd hand STE
with monitor and more, for much less money
than that :) We have at least seven (7)STE
and most of them came to us for free.
You can use 1,2 or 4 30pin 1MB SIMM modules
in a STE, and we have used up to 100ns SIMMs
without any problems.
To use a harddrive, you´ll need a host adapter.
It´s a little "cartridge" to insert to the
DMA port. With a "ICD LINK II", the STE can
access any SCSI1 and most SCSI2 HDs, but it
requires an active termination, else it won´t
work at all. We´ve found that a SCSI2 drive
that doesn´t work alone with the LINK, will
show up if there´s an older SCSI1 drive too
on the SCSI chain... Weird, but it works.
(most "ibm" SCSI2 drives behaves like that)
You also need to partion the HD and put a
driver on it, use HDDRIVER or SCSITOOLS.
And for every other HD operation, like
defrag, repair, undelete aso, there´s just
one tool to recommend: DIAMOND EDGE !!!
Cheers, have fun!
