I don´t think so... I´ve done it lotsa times, and all my STEs, plus the Mega 4 has now got 1.44´s :)
Some older DD (720) drives, from ´286 or so, required some buffering to work in an ST. But for example the drive in my Mega, "Matsushita JU-257A033P"; I just riped it out from an ´486 and plunked it in the mega, and hey presto, no problems!
Some drives might cause problems, but most of them won´t... SONY and Matsushita has always been good to me. Just have to check on the jumpers, and then go!
I just got an (very) old ST, a mate was going to throw it on the dump... It has no drive, and the power supply is missing as well. BUT the FDC is an 02-02, so I´m gonna hook on a HD floppy, SONY it is, and I DO expect it to work instantly... Hey, if it doesn´t, I´ll let you know. ;)
