O good start would be a modem, a copy of STIK, a copy of Newsie (both these are free) and an account with Zetnet (or another ISP, but I use Zetnet and have been with them since I was using an STE)...
Modem doesn't need to be anything special 14k4 is all the STe will support really unless you have an RSVE modified serial port....You should be able to get a 14k4 modem boxed with all its accessories for a tenner or less, try places like Loot and Micromart, or even a wanted ad in a local shop window...
