They say that Amiga technology wise is just as capable Sound wise as any other platform. You can easily use high-quality 16-bit audio cards (i.e. http://www.aliendesign.net/repulse/). Some people even use an 4 MB Yamaha DBX-50 MIDI wavetable.
--------------------------------
Congratulate them with that card. It won't make an Amiga run Cubase or Logic. Technology wise yes, but that's of no use without appropriate software. Using a MIDI device says absolutely nothing. It can be used on both systems equally well, but the Atari will still have the advantage of superior software.
---------------------------------
They say the difference in professional software availability is mainly because of difference in marketing. Amiga never was targeted at MIDI professinals. A second reason is that there are many high-quality free software on aminet to download.
---------------------------------
That's true, Amiga was a games and video oriented machine. As you have noticed, the Atari was a bit less good at games. But it had better MIDI and DTP software. Maybe they didn't target the Amiga at the MIDI market because it was less suitable and not designed for that purpose...
The availability of free software through aminet is a completely laughable excuse imho. That would suggest that aminet MIDI stuff made a Cubase/Logic port useless. Yeah, sure. Aminet is cool, won't deny that, but often it's also exaggerated a lot. It surely doesn't contain a Cubase killer.
----------------------------------
And they also state than a big box Amiga (A2000/3000/4000) technology wise would be much more suitable than an old Atari ST etc for sound editing because of the many expansion abilities (Zorro slots etc). In theory every hardware that can be connected to an Atari can also be connected to an Amiga. Only the developers have to support the plaform. According to them the OS isn`t a limitation either.
---------------------------------
First of all, the Atari *doesn't need* those expansion slots because either the technology was available in the machine itself (MIDI ports) or it could be connected some other way (like CBX-D5). Second, comparing an A3K/A4K with a ST makes no sense. Compare it with a TT (+ turbo board), then the difference is gone.
In theory anything can be connected to anything in a way, yes. So what? Won't help much if you're waiting for things to happen in theory...
Let's do it this way. I will admit that the Amiga was better suited for games and video. Then I expect the Amiga people to admit the Atari is "#1" in MIDI and DTP. And after that, maybe they could start making theories about stuff that matters or might even become a reality?
