To Mike
>Yes Sony has enough resources to do such a thing on their own. But if Playstations were also advertised by Philips, Panasonic, etc it would have been even a bigger succes.
So Sony actually are a bunch of very stupid people who are so self-centered that they won't allow other companies to make their (Sony's) success bigger? Come on...
>Yes that is one of the main reasons why things didn`t go that quickly. Even Gateway 2000 had to promise that they would continue producing/developing Amiga technologies before they were "allowed" to buy it.
Mike, if you want to believe that there were several companies who could not wait to finish off the Amiga, then do so. But please excuse me if I say that it is a ridiculous way of thinking. Give me one good reason why they should want to do it...
By the way, who forced Gateway to make that promise? Escom? Sure... ;)
>This kernel is extremely superior and in my view it is almost impossible for Amiga to do something similar in two years on their own. Amiga is putting together a five to seven page product strategy and technology brief that will be released to the Amiga community within this week. (I expect some details on some powerful software structures that enable "revolutionary" tranparent high-speed Networking/Internet capabilites.)
That doesn't contradict my point. It still is an "OS" based on a third party kernel. So that makes me think that it will rather be a QNX based workstation than a new machine.
>Nope it meant that I wasn`t precisely sure because I didn`t have much time during my last post. The development systems will be released in the late 3Q 1999. The first Amiga2s are targetted for the late 4Q 1999.
I'll believe that when I see it. Meanwhile I'm still expecting to see a crate of beer delivered to my home in late '99 or early 2K... ;)
>Correct the first bunch of Amiga software from the Amiga companies will be made with keeping PPC specced Amigas in mind and will not directly utilize the special capabilities. But they will be at least of "mainstream" quality. They will be written in very portable code and api's like C++ and OpenGL. But these will be the very first software for the new Amiga. The orginal Amiga in the beginning didn`t come with software that actually made the most of the hardware either.
Blech... C++ and OpenGL? And you're actually happy about that? One of the main advantages of the old Amiga and Atari platform was that most software was hardcoded, and thus about as fast as it could be. This advantage is definitely lost now, especially because the OS is expected to run on different processors. Demos will be a thing of the past and will evolve into the "3d world with lotsa other crap" stuff that doesn't make use of the full capacity of the machine. Exactly what the peecee is famous for. :(
>A super secret company. Linus Torvalds work there (Linux creator). And some major companies/people (including Paul Allen) have invested in the "Thing" the are producing! ;)
Stay tuned they will release this thing this year! :)
Okey... I'll wait and see.
>The new Amiga is a too big of a task to be produced by only one company.
Not if the company would be strong enough. I'm not sure whether I should use Sony as an example again. :)
>(All of the components in PCs and Macs are produced by different 3rd party developers)
Produced yes. The development of the platform was in both cases done by one company though.
>Amiga has written contracts so if the component suppliers don`t deliver on time these will have a big problem and rest assured that this won`t happen.
Then please explain me why the development of this machine has taken more than two years and that other release deadlines were broken before.
Cheers,
/Peter.
