The format-procedure that AHDI or HDDriver
(presumably) use is a low-level format and
this is only intended for MFM and RLL drives.
SCSI and IDE drives don't need to be formatted low-level and therefore, AHDI and
HDDriver should prevent you from doing this
(could even damage your drive, depending on
how dumb the on-disk controller is).
Repartitioning should be enough to get the
drive to work.
