To Havoc. I would like some AmiCola instead of Beer! ;) => http://www.amiga.com/diary/1999/990702-e.html

No they aren`t stupid they are focusing on making alot of money. By being the only company that produces them they will make sure of that. But there would be even more Playstations sold and software made for it if other companies could join the fun.

OK I will give you one good reason. Well when Shapeshifter come out first Apple computer was very shocked. It was a software Mac emulator that can emulate a Mac at the equivelant power of the Amiga that was emulating it. Why would someone buy a complete Macintosh when it is so easy to emulate it on an Amiga and it is virtually impossible to do the same on a Mac.
They made the right choice to go fully PowerPC as Amiga had very big financial problems ($357 million loss in 1993) and couldn`t make the same step. But my 68060 Amiga is at least 4 times faster than the fastest 68k Macintosh ever released.

> By the way, who forced Gateway to make that promise?

He is a post I received form someone who calls himself a leader in the community. ;)
I believe him that this isn`t a fake post. But you have to decide fo yourself. This is a small part of the post he posted to Amiga`s President Jim Collas.

I can't make excuses for the past but I can set the proper plans for the future. I am probably wasting my words since you won't believe me anyway but I do care about the Amiga. I am working aggressively to break Amiga away from Gateway and make it an independent company that can chart it's own course uninhibited by any large bureaucratic corporation. This is the only way it can rise again. I understand your frustration and we are working aggressively on new products. I am personally working 80 hours a week to make this happen. I know that there have been many delays but I promise you that 1999 is going to be an extremely exciting year for Amiga. All I can say at this point is that you will see constant progress in the next six months.

Why can`t a good compact, efficient, real-time, protected and reliable kernel be the core of a good Consumer orientated OS? (The people who would think that probably thought that Amiga is a games machine when it had better games. But actually it was also the best for video-editing, raytracing, mutli-tasking, special effects etc. too.)

You can allways stay programming in Assembly if you want. But nowadays if you want to produce a product with the complexity or extravagance of todays software you need sophisticated tools and a high-level language like C++. With the exponential increase of proccessing power the limitations won`t be the speed of your product but the capabilities of the programmers.

Even the playstation2 isn`t solely a Sony product. The CPU, dubbed the "Emotion Engine" or "EE" was codeveloped by Toshiba Corp . Actually they almost rely on 3rd party companies for all hardware used in the Playstation2. To have to design everything for yourself (one company) is a too big of a task and actually a waste of energy you can better let specialized companies do what they do best and concentrate on the aspects that will differ with other systems like the OS and an efficient structure. The new Amiga will use the best technolgies available.

Sincerely, Mike Bouma.

Amiga2 be there! Be there Real-Time!
