Yes, Amigas were good computers... Whether people tell you they are better or worse, than the ST, is irrelevant. They can both do their own things, in their own ways.
I would honestly say though, that to take the Amiga seriously, you really should get a hard disk for it.
The ST was easier to use without one, and I always found the amiga was very poor wih serious stuff, until I got the HD for it... after that, it was much better.
In terms of power, and speed though, it was always much, much slower than the ST when they were put head to head, and also giving the amiga more memory, was a real pain after 1MB - more so that the ST was, so I never bothered with it.
What software I had for both the ST, and Amiga, I always thought, that the Amiga versions, were kind-of "Thrown together" and the ST Software was much more thought out in comparison. This applies to all the Applications software I had, and should not apply to the whole range of course!
Saying that, if you want to play games, then the Amiga wins hands down everytime, I am sorry to say, but its a fact.
If you really want one, then go for an 030 model, with more than 1MB - I have seen some fairly well powered Amiga's for as little as £100 so shop around - The best deal I saw ( and missed actually ) was an 040 with 16MB ram, and 200MB HD for just £60 - so the deals are out there...Somewhere.
Either way, the amiga was a very popular computer, and there is plenty of very good software available for it, so as long as you realise the age of it, and do not judge it by todays PC ( What PC owners seem to do all the time ), then you will find that you have a good computer, than can do anything you can want from it.
