Don`t listen to this guy as he is biased. All Amigas could be upgraded much easier than any Atari computers released at the time (Yes even an A500, CDTV or CD32). Sandra I would suggest to go for an A1200 though. They are often far cheaper and you can put the motherboard into a tower with Zorro and/or PCI slots so you can easily add a graphics, PPC, sound, etc cards into it.
As for the Atari ST being more powerful than an A500. This is absolutely crap. What did happen though was because of the similarities of the two platforms developers often wrote a version for the less powerful Atari ST first. Or else they would go through hell porting it to Atari ST afterwards. The CPU was slightly faster (12%) so some early applications mainly used the CPU instead of Amiga`s superior custom chips. Some games like Civilization and Pirates were slightly quicker on the Atari ST because of this. I even remember a game called The new Zealand Story which was an exact port from the Atari ST on the Amiga. The 8-bit coin-up version kicked the butt of this version though it was still a nice game. Later games did use the full potential of the Amiga 500 though, with games like for instance Elfmania, (a beat`em up game which comes on just two 880kb disks but it looks as good as a top playstation title)
The Amiga is today only used professionally by graphic artists and video gurus.
