I often read the technology news on the web and theres a bit of discussion lately that the AMD might finally be able to bust Intels monopoly in the Value PC market. The reasoning for this is that VIA have released the integrated KM133 chipset and SIS have also released and integrated chipset so really low cost socket A boards will now come into the market.
As I said before...
Imagine a ST case with a Duron, a SIS chip and a floppy attached with a hard drive as well. It doesn't need to be a PC mobo... you could make a special one to fit in the case since there is no need to implement PCI slots etc. (well maybe just one out the back of the case as an expansion slot). But it would be all standard hardware.
So what would we have then? A really nice little machine we could really play with. And as LST mentioned in another thread MagicPC is already here. So why not adopt it as the TOS of the future? And the price... this is sub $300. The only thing I'd like to see added to MagicPC is the ability to crunch native x86 (not windows) apps as well.
If we had one of these I'm sure the Mint guys could come across too as that is less TOS dependant now... so I wonder how long it would be for them to do the port and add the 68k emulation (already available in linux) there for the older stuff.
I think this way we have a real way into the future. In 3 years time we could just have the same but use the newest value x86 and integrated chipset then. And no more ports of the OS ever :)
I say to Anders that sure its not 68k... but I don't think we can expect to go into the future with it unless emulated. If you make the new atari PPC you still have to do the same. But as I said in another thread .. I am worried that PPC will die and besides its so expensive compared with the rest of the PC market.
Anyway thats my idea... but maybe I am the devil to some out there!
