Hi,
Well, all TOS versions correspond to a specific Atari (i.e. TOS 1.x for the ST,
TOS 2.05/2.06 for the Mega STe, TOS 3.x for the TT and then for the Hades,
TOS 4 for the Falcon, etc...). There was never a standard in Atari's history (you
can't change your TOS version on a machine - whereas there's no problem with
Linux or some other OSes (Windows for example.. urgh, somebody will kill me!)).
The only change I've done in the past was loading TOS 1.04 from disk at
boot, to replace my 520STf's TOS 1.02 (for formatting MSDOS floppies...)
sometimes. I was happy, except that my available amount of RAM was tiny then
(there was also a dual-TOS expansion board at a time - I think it was TOS 2.06 -
but it was expensive and the interest was low). The original Atari can't be
tuned very much : the MegaST offered a possibility (plugging a board onto the
CPU, it killed a lot of 68000...), as the TT and MSTE did (VME port). I can't
remember if the Falcon's DSP port has been already used (???).
Even if we don't use Intel or AMD processors, we can easily use other PC
hardware : sound or video boards (I don't like the chipsets which are embedded
onto the motherboards), scanners, printers (already done, be there's a lack of
drivers), webcams, and so on.. they're cheap and easy to find (all Hades owners
know that I'm talking about the ET4000 and ET6000 they have in their machines).
Voila...
Sorry for my poor french writing, I'm at work and I'm tired... ;-)
