What do you mean half the screen? Is the ST a PAL or NTSC machine? You better try it on a new TV, just to make sure it can handle whichever frequency you throw at it.
You can use HD floppies with the ST, you might want to use something else but the normal gem-format, try FastCopy3 or similar.
