Patrice Mandin has indeed been toying with MAME.
Any >=68040 should be VERY capable of playing MAME games because the vast majority used 68k CPU's to start with until the mid 90's. With our 68k architecture there is NO emulation required to execute 68k instructions so only the peripherals need to be emulated, a 50MHz 68030 may even be capable of this. MAME would scream on the Hades 060 or other 060 variants.
The problem is that someone out there will need to optimise display and audio routines and probably modify the engine to natively process 68k instructions rather than emulating a 68k on a 68k processor which is rather silly. That could be a lot of work but probably the Amiga community have already done the latter. The question is who can provide fast video and audio routines? Patrice Mandin has done them for his DOOM, Hexen, Heretic and Quake ports so it is an option.
I'd say an accelerated Falcon with DSP being utilised would be the minimum one would want to use for the MAME package.
Cheers,
Anthony
