As Lex says, 1MB is almost useless, so 4MB is definetely to be high on your shopping list.
I have Linux on the TT, and its absolutely ROCK-STEADY, but although I know you can get Linux on the ST, I cannot say where from? - If Debian on the TT is anything to go by, it should be a fairly good release, but please note, that the 68000 is NOT actually supported on Linux... Even the 030 has troubles with support, so I think you will be on your own with many things.
Go for Magic, sure!
When I upgraded to Magic ( v2 back then ) my humble 4MB STE was suddenly thrown into warp speed, and was much faster than a Falcon running MultiTOS. Of course, I was also using NVDI too, and the speed your ST will run at will quite honestly shock you!
Magic can, and does run on 1MB, but the chances of you actualy having any real use out of it, are slim, unless you cut back on AUTO programs & ACCessories, and even then you wont get that much use out of it until you get some RAM for it.
It may very well be a good idea to look out for cheap-o PC Simms, as there is a very good chance, that they wil work on the ST perfectly. You will also have to get an upgrade to have SIMMS put into the STFM - they are somewhere around £30 and a bit, from various companies
( I can see other people saying something here - remember the debate a few months ago lads? )
as for No.3
Chris Crosskey cn supply you with all the gen on IDE adapters for the ST, so I hope if you cannot find him, that he will find this.
Eh Chris!
