Linux will not work as there is no MMU on a Standard ST - there is a projected to get it to work but there is no point and they have given up.

You do need 4 Mb, if you can't get an adaptor bourd cheep then you could get an STE, (I got one in the UK for £31 inc P&P a few months ago).

Magic is good and you could also try FreeMint.
