The idea is certainly a sound one, how you would go about it, is beyond me!
As you say about the ST, then using the cartridge port would mean total compatibility with ALL Ataris, not too sure about clones,but then they probably dont need such a device.
The cartridge can allow true 16Bit I/O and 50Khz playback, and stereo too!
I honestly dont think it can do them all at the same time, but 2 out of 3 definitely.
I have Replay Stereo, which does 8Bit, but Replay 16 is Mono!
Whether something can be done, along these lines we can only wait.
Surely, you only need to give the decoder a few peices of info abotu the MP3 you want it to play, and them surely it will only be a matter of streaming the data?
Getting a stream to go at the same speed as playback may be a problem, so maybe a buffer is in order, and there is plenty of info for RAMDISKS using the cartridge port, so maybe something along those lines are in order?
Oh, I dont know?
I should think its at least worth a deeper look, and for a good long think about it.
I recon such a project would either be so simple, it will be so annoying that it took so long to come up with the idea, or so difficult, that its not worth it.
