the Falcon Xbios is a bit buggy in some of the new calls for video.
The Xbios $58 you describe is buggy to restore the resolution correctly, and if you have an accelerator fitted, it will use the high-frequency clock, which might very well make it look like if you got some RGB mode set.
However, Whip! should work OK, so it's a bit hard to tell what might be wrong.
I recently made my own personal "videolib" available to a polish programmer, so I guess I could just as well send it out completely in public.
This videolib uses hardware registers directly, so it doesn't go via Xbios at all, however I've not included all resolutions possible, only those I wanted to use myself, so it's not a perfect lib by any means.
