First off you do not need to buy an emulator as the two best ones WinSTon an PaCifiST are freeware. I would recommend WinSTon for a beginner as it works well under Windows and is now up to v0.3.
WinSTon runs most games just fine (on a reasonably fast PC), but if you wanted to use more serious applications then I would recommend sticking with your ST.. A very good resoursce for emulator ST stuff is the THe Little Green Desktop, www.atarist.com. It has loads of disk images for download too.
