Could do with some more info, what is the error message, what TOS versions are you using, what program are you using to format the disks with.
If I can remember correctly, the 5 1/4 drive use a different seek rate to the 3 1/2 drives which could be one problem (there are programs around that will change the seek rate of the drive for you, but if you do need one then you should try and get the one that came with the unit).
If the program you are using to format the disks is limiting description of error try getting Fast Copy Pro, it should be able to format the 5 1/4 style disks and has good error reporting (available on one of the Pompey Pirates disk, you can find them on LGD).
