2 Hours for an 8.4GB?
Are you serious?
Well, no, I would say that is a full-on Hard Format, with full error checking and so on, if it takes that long!
I am not saying that you can only format a disk a few times, no, thats not it at all. But, I am honestly telling the truth in saying that Formatting the disk DOES wear it out if you do it too many times.
The other drive dying on you, is obvious what the problem is!
Its IDE!
I rest my case.
Many people say, that because PC's are built very low cost, they cut some serious corners too!
So, if you want a solid Drive for your stuff, then go for SCSI every time.
I suppose thats why Internet Servers always use SCSI, and NOT IDE!?
If its any help mate, I have a whole bag of IDE Drives... Hang on, I will count them.
Ok, I have 34 IDE Drives in total.
In the Celeron ( Windows 98 ), its a new 10.2Gb, with no bad sectors.. YET!
In the AMD ( Linux ) I have a 1.2GB, and 6 smaller Drives, all IDE, and every one of them have bad sectors, except the 420, which has a full 404MB to use, but the Boot Sectors is corrupt, so it wont boot!
The Cyrix has a similar situation, but has 3 IDE Drives, which again, all have bad sectors.
In the bag, is 23 more IDE Drives, and ALL of them, have either failed, or have so many bad sectors, that I decided to ditch them.
I have tons of SCSI Drives, and only one of them has EVER given me any trouble, and the silly thing is, that I put it onto the AMD, and guess what? - No bad sectors!
I did mention that one!
