True, but then, you can also get IDE RAID, so that makes it also a bit out! othwise, they would stick to IDE completely then wouldnt they?
SCSI and IDE are on par with each other when you are only using one device on each line, but if you have more than one, then SCSI starts to fly, and if you have 7, or 16 or even the 32 device SCSI then IDE does not have a hope in hells chance of getting anywhere near as fast as SCSI. So your right there!
My Linux Cluster has both IDE, and SCSI RAID ( Both software Linear RAID though ), and while the IDE is 32 bit DMA, and the SCSI is 16 non DMA, they are not that far off being about the same in terms of transer rates ( IDE is 13MByte/Sec and SCSI is 14 MByte/Sec ) - Although I have had to use a combination of IDE Controls for the drives - On-board Primary, and Seconday IDE gives me 4 devices, while a PhoneBlaster gives me 2 more, and SBIDE PnP gives another 2 so a speed increase would be on the cards if I was to use a true RAID card, but I dont have a billion quid to waste! ( Slight exaj there by about a fiver! )
Of course yes, any company could make an IDE every bit as good as a SCSI.
The bottom line is that its not that one is IDE, the other is SCSI, that makes the quality any different, its just that they deliberately cut corners.
Its not to make drives as cheap as possible, but they deliberately make it so it will not last too long, otherwise, they would not make any real profit over the 30 Million drives that they sell each year to replace the failed ones that Mr X bought last year!
Funny thing actually, I have been doing a SCSI v IDE Web Page if you want to read anymore into IDE v SCSI, then you could have a laugh by looking at that!
Some of the links dont work, but I think its pretty much sorted out
The link should be
www.fatrakoon.20m.com/hardware/scsi-ide.htm
but, I dont yet know properly, as I am only fannying about.
If the links does not work, co to the homepage, and follow the links, if it still does not work, I obviously havent put it there yet!
I will make sure in a bit, nd put it there by the time you read this actually!
