It's been a while since I used my ST seriously, but if I remember correctly, weren't app extensions for somehow getting what we know in win9x as file associations? You installed an app by putting it in the root directory (or was it the auto folder?), and then you could launch the app by double clicking on the files it "owned". It was something to do with having an application "installed" anyway...
