No, you aren't a liar.. and you're not entirely wrong. RLL is, as was said before, a different method of encoding the data (hence the name, Run Length Limited) and when used with MFM drives, increases the formatted capacity 50%. Drive manufacturers of the day of course said this was evil and would corrupt your data, but I suspect that was just a scare tactic to keep people from getting more storage without lining the makers' pockets. Always worked for me.. but then I reformatted hard drives on a monthly basis back then anyway. Word of caution: MFM and RLL drives had jumpers to determine their status just like IDE drives do.. they worked (for a while) whether you changed them or not, though.. so check that if you want them to last.
