I think CC65 for Atari is the best compiler, it's about 600Kb in size total with all libs but it's very good. The development for this compiler on 8-bit has stopped but for an cross-compiler look at www.cc65.org, this compiler is based on the CC65 for atari and is up-to-date with support. Also CBM-64/APPLE support.
It's almost ANSI-C compatible.
Lightspeed C was nice because it has an editor and other things, but CC65 has XE banked memory support and more...
Just take a cheap XT or bigger PC and turn it into a CC65 development system for 8-bit, you can also run Turbo-assembler on it, a nice development from Poland...
