Disconnecting the internal bleeper has no effect on the rest of the audio system.
There are also no jumpers on the mainboard to do with audio.
Do you have any sound on the sm124 ?
If so, your sound system should be working. If you boot with headphones connected, do you get any sound when you press for instance the spacebar (while booting)? Tried with another headphone ?
As for external audio. There are several external DA(DA) convertors (up to 8 channels like in JAM8), which give the system a much clearer sound and make mixing a lot easier. These are not soundcards, but just better AD or DA convertors that plug into the DSP port.
