I think (for what it is worth) that many users purchase their PC's hoping that it will be all singing, all dancing and give them 100% reliability. The truth of the matter is that we are being asked to pay higher cost, for more technology, which fewer of us use.
The PC market is about bigger, brighter, faster, flasher and more gimicky set-ups that encompass everything but the kitchen sink. Average Joe goes along with whatever the market suggests.
Damion hit the nail on the head a few clicks back, in his suggestion that perhaps it is less & not necessarily more that we require. The fewer gimicks, the less chance of crashes etc.
Atari computers have always attracted me because they are SO reliable, use less memory for programs that would cost 3 perhaps 4 times the amount of the PC version, which churn away as if heaving a rather large weight up hill! I'm no tech-head and have thus far never dived deeper than the surface with these machines, yet LOOK, there are huge Atari communities so these things aren't being forgotten and shouldn't really be classed as Vintage, they are current and the software houses/publishers and Hardware manufacturers should perhaps be asked to look again.
Rant over, make of that lot what you will...
