Hey guys, I'm all for this! And I'd be happy to help in whatever way I can. Unfortunately that doesn't mean programming, but there are other, probably more important ways. I will respond to Rakoon's and Traxes comments separately.
You say you have a huge library of PD stuff, and that's an invaluble resource, but it's relatively useless unless people can easily find what they want. You say that for you to index/organize it would take months, but this can be reduced to man-hours (sorry to any ladies out there if I'm not being PC here). And the nice thing about man-hours is that they can be divided by hours, or men(people). My suggestion is, is there anyone else out there that is willing to participate in a group project to index these files? That would take the load off your shoulders (minimum you'd have to do is make the files availble), and get it done quicker. Can you produce maybe a list of these? All we have to do initially is break them down by function, although a small description of some of the better files might be useful too (size, power, main features, HW reqs...). Big project sure, but well worth the effort. If there are so many of us out there, surely some handful has the time and energy to help out.
And why stop at PD softs, or just this collection? Perhaps there are some archives that already contain data about many of them, or at least knowledgable folks that are at least passingly familiar with them You want to work for Atari? Here's a chance. But there are other things as well. A group such as Trax suggests would best be able to stratigize and figure out which products would be most useful, and should come first, and assign those capable and willing (i.e. those who join) to do these projects. It's all in the planning. How else do you think these big corps got started?
