Thanks everyone for replying to the message I posted. Nice to see that quick, friendly and helpful advice is just a couple of hours away across the Pond, or even on your own back stoop. I'll check the sites you mentioned out.

As for the Marpet 512k board. If you are willing to sell/part-x or swap it with me, then please do see whether it is compatible. Most of the programmes I wish to run deal with MIDI and samples etc, so the more RAM I can throw at these things, the better...
