Now I remember, they were used in Kingpin also (it ran on the Q2 engine, heavily modified).

I was under the impression that only Quake used BSP maps though? Doom used WADs and PWADs, iirc. Maybe these were just packing flies like the .pak of Quake and .pk3 of Q3 (interestingly, these are just renamed zip files...)
