Having played with Linux on a Falcon in the past, I can verify that 14MB is enough. It's not all that speedy, however.
As for your question regarding memory, surpassing 14MB requires an add-on card like the CenTurbo. Thus it is possible, but not cheap.
I do not use MiNT often, but I have heard that GNU sources build and compile WITH WORK. Do not expect the task to be trivial. Protected/Virtual memory is supported, providing you have a 68020 or higher.
