The problem with using HD as DD Floppies is simply that the actual chemicals used to make the magnetic surface are completely different.
HD Drives will read both HD and DD Disks quite well, as the disks are formatted as they should be, but even then, if you format a HD Disk as a DD, they will become unstable.
Yes, you can do it, but you should NEVER expect the data to be reliable at all.
Its only of any real use if you say, have your ST and PC together, and just want to copy a few things over quickly.
Are the old External Floppies all Single Sides too??? - As in 360k?
That would also be an issue too because older technology will also make the disks even worse off!
I seriously suggest you buy a new floppy drive my friend, or at least get some DD Disks.
