Well, I always had the idea of making an Atari computer using PC hardware and a good emulator as the software level. The hardware part is not so difficult.... I could do a box similar to the 1040 case and put all the stuff there. I obviusly would use a video card with RF output so I can connect it to a TV.
The problem is the software level. I can attach any emulator to a mini-version of Freedos, so when you turn the computer on, TOS appears automatically and fast. The problem is that I couldnt find any good emulator for DOS. Pacifist is good for games, but not so good for apps... TOSBOX is good for apps but doesn't run games... GEMulator is the same problem... I guess the best emulators in this days are for Windows?
Perhaps, it would be great to have MagicPC for DOS....
Conclusion: the emulation is not the option... at least in this days...
