Well, yes, I see your point, drivers are few and far between, but you do get drivers for many cards.
You can use a TVCard so you can watch TV on your Atari, thats one use for a PCI slot.
You can use many of the Creative SoundBlaster cards as there is drivers for them.
You can also use many graphic cards too, I think the ET3000 / ET4000 range are the most popular because there is many drivers for them, and there is also something about 3dfx cards being run on an atari too ( There was a post a short while ago about that ) and even I have tried to mess about with 3dfx under linux, and I recon that even a slow atari would be able to use it ( not as a good PC would of course, but it wont take much to at least get some use out of it )
So, the drivers are there, not for such things like high-end GFX Cards like GeForce, Matrox, NVIDIA or Voodoo, but certainly for basic SVGA there are.
