It is not really hard but not really cheap either. You need a 1.44 MB diskdrive, a new disk-controller (AJAX i suppose) and in most cases a new DMA-controller.
Then, if you want your Atari to autodetect wether the disk you just inserted is a HD or a DD disk and don't want to switch manually (using an accessory), you also need TOS 2.06, which cannot be built into an Atari STf or Mega ST without additional hardware.
And to do the installation you need to solder
out a few chips and resolder them. Not really fun.
