Not sure about TV AV connectors in the US but in the UK it's a normal co-ax aerial lead that plugs into your TV or VCR. Tune yout TV/VCR to channel 36 (the same that Channel 5 and most TV equipment use for RF connections).
If you find that your joysticks don't work, you can replace them with any Atari/Amstrad/Commodore joystick from the 80s and 90s, or a Sega Master System or Megadrive (genesis) control pad (but only the 'B' button will work).
And you'll need some cartridges.
