You could use STinG for connecting and NEWSie for reading mail. Both these program are free to use!
If you use STinG you probably will need a package called HSMODEM to update some of the serial routines in TOS, but I think that HSMODEM can be found on Peter Rottengatters page. One drawback with NEWSie is that it requires a separate text editor for writing the mail, but there are also other mail programs available.
The newest version of STinG itself is found on Ronald Andersons page.
