yes you are right, the sound chip is unlikely to be the problem.

There is a chip called AJAX which controls 1.44mb floppy drives. I bought one for my Teety from Best Electronics in the US for about £25.

This spare drive youve got. Is it an Epson SMD-300 and are the jumpers set correctly??

I got an Epson drive off ebay for £5 from a scrap PC, I changed the front panels over and set the jumpers and it works very nice.

Also one of the TTs jumpers (number 7 I think?) switches between 720k and 1.44Mb modes)
