That's right, the LAN port implements the RS-422 standard. It's not visible to the OS as a network device though, only as a serial port. This is not completely useless, you can attach an Apple MODEM or Printer to this port, I think the LAN port shows as Serial 4 or somesuch.
Some of the network stacks for TOS allow the physical layer to propogate along the LAN port, so you can network Atari machines with TCP/IP. You could in theory hook it up to an Apple machine with IP for AppleTalk or OpenTransport, but both machines would need to be able to speak a common file sharing protocol (NFS for example) otherwise all you can do is PING your atari box from the mac...
But unless you can get an Apple LocalTalk NIC for the PC (I suspect they exist) then you won't be able to link to a PC. Use GhostLink instead.
