Alot of STes that were manufactured in Mexico have the notorious dma problem. IIRC the early STes had ST dma chips which caused for the corruption problems. I have one of these STes. That said, you can use an IDE drive without worries.

Also even with the mod, or corrected dma chip the SH204 and some other peculiar drives like the early ICD and supras can be troublesome for corruption in use with an Ste.
