I've had issues with my Toshiba 8x SCSI drive on my TT - it would be found and would install correctly, and I would sometimes be able to read a disc, but most of the time I get a not responding error (or Fehler #35 in MagiC).
I eventually tracked it down to bad termination - it was at the end of my SCSI chain but I already had terminators on my hard disc, so I tried jiggling terminators, connectors and ID numbers. Eventually I gave up, but the drive worked OK as the only SCSI drive drive on my falcon.
So I think you might possibly have dodgy or wrong termination.
