NO NO NO!.
Its a piece of cake to upgrade these 520's.
You are lucky because you have a 1040 mobo with missing chips. I have exactly the same STFM that I upgraded when it belonged to a friend of mine, then I purchased it from him when he lost interest.
You should be able to still find the DRAM's from maplins ( http://www.maplin.co.uk/ ) or RS components ( http://www.rswww.com/ ) If you have problems finding the chips, email me (take out the nospam out of the addy) and I will see if I can locate a supplier for you.
Dont forget you will also need the decoupling capacitors too if they arent in the board (unlikely), I cant remember what they are, but they will me small value ceramics. Also, IIRC you will need a few resistors too. Just look at the mobo and see how the existing chips are fitted and get the values of the components needed.
