Yes, you are 99% spot on.
The russian style of fighting is called SAMBO
Its real pit fighting, and guess who has done 7 years at it?
Its ugly, and is not "Matrial Arts" as many know it, but it works!
The idea is similar to Judo in that you need to get someone "To the ground" in order for it to be most effective, and standup fighting ( Boxing / Karate etc ) are much more effective face to face, but once they are down... they stay down
Just try getting into a pissup fight with any of us, and you lose...
every time...
