The UK is generaly cheap, an STE can be picked up for about £20 - £60 (I got one for £21 inc postage).
Falcons are about £100+ if you can find one, any upgrades normally put the price up.
My TT I got from Canada, it ended up being sent by boat, this took 2 months and it was a bit bust up by the time I got it. I think as long as the sender packs it up good and well (lots of pading and tape) it should be fine, mine simlpy had a few plastic bags for comfort.
As for tax, I have found that in the UK they simply go by the amount and what the cost on the box. There are also different tax clases for differnet items (e.g. books are 0%). I got a 286 emulator for my falcon and got the chap to put in an old book and state a simplar price, no tax. This is at your own risk though.
