SpartaDOS uses a command-based system to work in, so to move to a subdirectory, you'll have to use MSDOS-type commands.
To move to a subdirectory in SpartaDOS, you'll do this:
D1:
D1:CWD >FILES
CWD (Change Working Directory) to Files subdirectory.
> Goes into subdirectory specified
< Goes out from subdirectory
D1:CWD <
This would move up one directory level.
I can't remember if there is a command to jump all the way back to the root directory, however.
As for the number of files you might have in a given subdirectory, that will likely be the real stumbling block, although it seems like you should have been allowed more than "20" files.
Since you're using APE, why not set up a "PC Mirror" instead? While in the DOS-based version of APE, press the "S" key and then choose which number drive you wish to assign as your PC mirror. For demonstration purposes, choose "1."
Now, turn your Atari on, holding down OPTION as you do so.
If you did it right, the APE Loader program should spring to life, offering you a quick-and-dirty menu-based means to access all those funtastic .exe and .com files.
Try that and see if it meets your needs. If you need more help, let me know and I'll try to give you a better instruction list to follow...
